1 Aztecs seek to defend district title and some

Last season, the district title came down to the last week of the regular season in a battle between El Dorado and Americas, each team a win away from clinching the title. In the end, El Dorado surged in the second half to win 53 40, finishing with a 5 1 record in district. The Aztecs advanced to the first round of the Class 6A state football playoffs but fell 66 40 and capped the season7 4 overall. This season, the Aztecs have five returning starters on offense and six returning starters on defense. However, the team will have a different look, starting with newEl Dorado head coach Ruben Torres, who made his way from Ysleta where he helped turn the program around and pushed the Indians totwo appearances in the Class 5A state football playoffs.Although there’s change, the team has meshed well through the offseason, the coach said. The offense has a string of talent beginning with wide receiver Tyquez Hampton, quarterback Cedarious Barfield, and slot receiver Jorge Hernandez. Other players to watch include running back Seth Davis and wide receiver Cameron Hill, younger brother of former El Dorado quarterback Austyn Hill.”We’ve got a lot of weapons on offense so I think everyone’s going to have a lot of opportunities to touch the ball, but I think the biggest thing, getting into this district and if we want to go two or three rounds deep, is establishing up front on both sides of the ball,” Torres said.Last season, www.jewellerygk7t6.top
starting quarterback Barfield got plenty of reps as a backup when Austyn Hill went down with an injury. As a sophomore backup, Barfield had 381 yards passing and 510 yards rushing for a total of 11 touchdowns.Hernandez has been an explosive piece for the El Dorado offense. Last season he recorded 873 yards receiving for eight touchdowns in addition to three interceptions on defense. Division I prospect Hampton had 562 yards receiving and six touchdowns.”It’s something similar to what we had last year but more lethal,” Hampton said. “We still have all our weapons from last year. I like what Coach Torres is doing with this offense the no huddle it gets defenses off track, they can’t really get their strategy together because we’re going fast.”The most important section of a team is the line. This season, center David Dominguez will lead the pack on offense. On defense, the Aztecs have defensive back Tyler Jones, linebacker Kevin Henderson, defensive end Jonathan Zarate, linebacker Willie Croslen (60 tackles), free safety Arturo Velez and safety Sal Avila. Henderson, who finished with 77 tackles last season, will lead the box.”Really looking forward to what our defense does and getting our ground game going,” Torres said. One of the biggest games of the season, perhaps a rivalry by now, is the game between El Dorado and Eastlake. The Falcons have become a powerhouse program with a collection of district trophies and recently two consecutive trips to the third round of the Class 5A state football playoffs.Expect it to be one of the most exciting clashes out of West Texas this season.”It’s going to be an exciting matchup, playing against a team like that with a high caliber is a good matchup anyway for us,” Hampton said. “We’re just looking forward to play against them.”
